Sooke: Community Information

Located west of Victoria, Sooke became incorporated in 1999. Sooke is divided into distinct areas known as Sooke Village, East Sooke, Broomhill, Saseenos, Sooke River, Whiffin Spit and “the West Coast Road”. There is a growing business section in the downtown core, good schools, sports facilities and an excellent museum.

Driving from Victoria to Sooke along the West Coast Road, you will experience the scenic ocean views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, as well as the grandeur of the Olympic Mountains. Sooke is situated in the Sooke Basin and here tourists and local residents enjoy saltwater fishing. You can explore local Provincial Parks as well as coastal beaches and this area combines a seaside ocean flavour as well as rich farmland. Sooke offers unique shopping opportunities. Outdoors activities include: golfing, cycling, fresh and salt water kayaking, canoeing, tennis, hiking, surfing, scuba diving and mountain biking. Also, the famous Juan de Fuca nature trails and the Galloping Goose trails are easily accessible from Sooke.

Sooke enjoys some of the mildest climate in Canada. It has a casual and relaxed lifestyle in a natural rural setting with many city amenities. Sooke is the gateway to the rugged west coast with its unspoiled beaches, rainforests, hiking trails and spectacular views of the Straight of Juan De Fuca and Olympic Mountains. Sooke is a popular tourist area. It also has a local government wharf and private marinas.

Parts of the community are served by a municipal water system. However there are large areas that are served by private wells and community water systems.

Location

Sooke is located on the southern point of Vancouver Island on Canada’s rugged west coast, just 40 minutes from the heart of downtown Victoria via the Trans Canada Highway #14.It is surrounded to the north, west and south by Juan de Fuca, and to the east by the District of Metchosin. Sooke’s terrain varies greatly, from the long, sandy beaches of Wiffin Spit, to the steep and wooded Sooke Hills. It encompassesapproximately 5,800 hectares of semi-rural land. Sooke is located within the Capital Regional District.

Recreation

With an abundance of parks and beaches, Sooke provides lots of recreational opportunities. Excellent fishing, boating, hunting, hiking and horseback riding are available. The area contains an abundance of lakes, parks and nature trails including the Galloping Goose linear park, East Sooke Park, Sooke Pot Holes, the well-known Sooke Harbour, the world-renowned West Coast and Juan de Fuca Trails as well as Botanical Beach at Port Renfrew. Sooke also offers great surfing and whale watching.

Sooke’s beaches offer a variety of year-round activities ranging from scuba diving to fishing, kayaking to beachcombing. Wiffin Spit Park is a natural spit that separates Sooke Harbour and Sooke Inlet. There is a crushed stone path along its entire length and the walk to the end of the spit where the lighthouse sits is leisurely. This is a beautiful spot for picnickers and birdwatchers.
