Langford: Community Information

Located in the Western Communities, the District of Langford is a young growing community that offers affordable housing and a wide range of services and amenities. Langford is within easy access to the Greater Victoria metropolitan area. Residents enjoy pristine parks, crystal-clear lakes, and lots of recreational activities. Langford also includes the Olympic View and Bear Mountain developments featuring golf courses, a hotel and spa along with residential housing.

The Langford area is large, extending from West Saanich to View Royal, along Colwood, Metchosin, Sooke and northwards including portions of the Malahat Drive. The City of Langford is divided into distinct areas such as Glen Lake, Happy Valley, Florence Lake, Langford Proper, Thetis Heights and the Goldstream Area. There is a business and commercial area running from the Goldstream/Millstream intersection to Jacklin Road and extending to Westshore Town Centre on Kelly Road.

Most of the community is served by a municipal water system however there are large parts that are serviced by private wells. Septic tanks and septic fields are the norm though some areas are served by private sewage systems.

Location

Langford is located just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria via Highway 1. It is part of the CRD and is one of the 5 communities that comprise the West Shore.

Schools

Langford lies within the boundaries of School District 62 and is home to Belmont Secondary School, one of Vancouver Island’s largest high schools.

Recreation

Langford has 7 golf courses in or near the city, several arenas and the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. It also has a multi-screen movie theatre.

The city of Langford Trail System makes all areas accessible and provides good walkways. Langford is accessible via the Galloping Goose Trail. Langford offers a diversity of beautiful parks and lakes and lots of recreational activities. The larger lakes include Thetis Lake, Langford Lake, Glen Lake and Florence Lake. The popular Goldstream Park also has a provincial campground and is famous for its annual salmon spawn.

Economy

Much of Langford’s growth is due largely to increasing demand for land and the decreasing availability of land in other regions of the CRD. Homebuyers are looking to the West Shore for affordable housing and “green” housing, which has resulted in considerable growth in this municipality. Because of its close proximity to Victoria, many of Langford’s residents commute to town each day. Langford has its own thriving business sector and the downtown core, located on Goldstream Avenue, boasts a wide range of businesses housed in signature-style buildings. Langford is also home to “big-box” format retailers such as Costco, Home Depot, Superstore and Rona, and they provide a number of jobs to residents in the area.
