Colwood: Community Information

Located to the west of the City of Victoria, Colwood offers a wide range of attractions and activities for all ages. You can play a round of golf in the morning and in the afternoon go fishing. The Royal Colwood Golf Club is open year-round. Hatley Castle and Fisgard Lighthouse are historical landmarks. Colwood is a family oriented, fast growing community. Colwood Neighbourhoods: Belmont Park, Colwood Corners, Hatley Park, Mill Hill, Royal Roads. The City of Colwood is divided into residential pockets such as Triangle Mountain, Colwood Creek, Colwood Lake Estates, Wishart and Lagoon areas. There are business centres at Colwood Corners and Hatley Park.

The area is well served by public transit. There is a private medical clinic available in Colwood Corners for emergency assistance, but most medical problems are taken care of at the Victoria General Hospital located on Helmcken Road which is very close by.

Colwood is a growing community, close to Victoria, and offers numerous economic opportunities. The area still has a number of small hobby farms that contribute to a local produce market from June through September. This urban centre is primarily residential, but is increasingly becoming more commercial.

Location

Colwood is located just a 15 minute drive from Victoria via Highway 1. Colwood is geographically south of Victoria and is Western Canada’s southernmost city. It lies within the Capital Regional District and is one of the areas that make up the West Shore, or Western Communities. It is easily accessible by bus, car, or bike; the Galloping Goose Trail takes riders right through the community, making cycling a viable option for numerous commuters to and from Victoria.

Schools

Colwood is part of School District 62 which offers 5 elementary schools and 2 middle schools to area residents. High school students attend the nearby Belmont Secondary School. Colwood is also home to Royal Roads University.

Recreation

Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre is located in the heart of Colwood and is considered to be one of the best sport complexes in BC. For golf lovers there are the Royal Colwood and Olympic View golf courses, as well as the nine hole Juan de Fuca course. In the area there is also the Bear Mountain Arena. Colwood also offers beach combing, parks, and hiking.

Royal Roads University is located in beautiful Hatley Park which has over 15km of hiking trails through some of the largest and oldest trees in the province.  The area offers a nature reserve as well as a beach for sun tanning, swimming, wind-surfing, sailing or just walking. Views of downtown and views of the American coast over the Strait of Juan de Fuca are also enjoyed. In addition, there are lots of smaller parks.

Economy

Colwood continues to grow both economically and demographically. Because of its close proximity to Victoria many residents commute each day. Colwood has an increasing number of businesses in the service sector, retail and construction. There are also many home-based businesses in the area.
