Central Saanich: Community Information

Central Saanich offers a mix of rural and urban lifestyles. Farmland covers nearly two thirds of the municipality. It offers scenic drives, the big Island View Beach, and world-renowned Butchart Gardens. Most of Central Saanich is agricultural use. Along with horse farms and hobby farms, you will also find neighbourhoods of homes and townhouses. Although it is primarily a rural community, Central Saanich has one of the largest light industrial zones in the Capital Regional District.

Central Saanich enjoys the benefits of being located close to the city of Victoria, while at the same time the area maintains a low crime rate and quality of life that is expected here in this rural community. Central Saanich has 2 shopping centres, located in Saanichton and Brentwood Bay; several services are available including restaurants, groceries and banking. It has as well an industrial/commercial area called Keating X Road.

Location

Central Saanich is located on the Saanich Peninsula, 21 km north of Victoria, via the Pat Bay Highway. It borders North Saanich on the north, and Saanich on the south. It is surrounded on the east and west by Haro Strait and Saanich Inlet. It is easily accessible by car, bus or bicycle, and is within close proximity to the Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries.

Recreation

For recreation, residents of Central Saanich go to the nearby Panorama Recreation Centre. The area also has numerous parks including Centennial Park, known for its picnic area and playground.  Cyclists tend to make this municipality a destination for its km of winding, scenic roads.

Economy

Central Saanich began as a farming community and many hobby farms, as well as small working farms and vineyards are still in operation in the area. Over the past few decades, Central Saanich has seen increasing residential, commercial and industrial development. Some residents commute to nearby Victoria, while others are retired or operate home-based businesses.
